Messmer Questions U.S. University Leaders Regarding Antisemitic Demonstrations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, in the House Education and Workforce Committee, Rep. Mark Messmer (R-IN) joined his colleagues in questioning the presidents of several American universities to gain insight about what they are doing to protect Jewish students from antisemitic attacks and demonstrations occurring on their campuses.

No American student or educator should be subjected to this kind of appalling antisemitic attack at any time, let alone when they are on campus. What is even more disturbing is that the leadership at these learning institutions are protecting the antisemite aggressors, which furthers the injustice against the victims,” said Rep. Messmer. “I am proud to be a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee which is doing excellent work exposing these anti-Jewish attacks and the hatefulness that embodies those perpetrating them.

Earlier this year, the House Education and Workforce Committee convened a hearing to expose the rise of antisemitism at college campuses across America during which Members of Congress asked university administrators why they were allowing disgraceful treatment of Jewish students and faculty at the schools they represent.

In a follow-up hearing this week, Congressional Republicans, including Rep. Messmer, demanded answers from more school officials about why this horrific activity continues to be tolerated on campuses around the country.

BACKGROUND:

Schools such as Georgetown, CUNY, and UC Berkeley have failed to address the drivers of antisemitism on their campuses, leading to surging antisemitism and hostility toward Jews, decreased ideological diversity, and diminished discourse. These institutions of higher learning, like many others, have failed to protect Jewish students and faculty. In some cases, the schools have even financially supported or contributed to the antisemitic organizations.
