WASHINGTON – Today Congressman Mark Messmer (IN-08) released the following
statement regarding his committee assignments for the 119th Congress after being
selected to serve on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and the House
Agriculture Committee. “I am deeply honored to be selected to serve on two important committees representing
Indiana’s 8th Congressional District in my first term in Congress,” said Congressman
Mark Messmer (IN-08). “With the Navy Surface Warfare Center Crane (NSWC Crane)
– the third-largest naval installation in the world – located in our district, it’s essential
that Indiana’s Eighth District is actively involved in all discussions related to the defense
of our nation.
“As the ninth largest farming state in the nation, Indiana’s billion-dollar Agriculture
industry is an important and invaluable part of our state’s economy. I will work to
protect our farmers and support our nation’s food supply and address the many issues
facing farm families and rural America.
“I look forward to advocating for Indiana and all Americans as we work to strengthen
America’s position on the global stage and ensure that all Hoosiers receive the support
they deserve.”
The Chairmen from the two committees welcomed Rep. Messmer to their teams:
“I am excited to welcome Mark Messmer to the House Armed Services
Committee,” Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) said. “Mark will be a champion for Indiana’s
servicemembers, including the men and women at Navy Surface Warfare Center Crane. I
look forward to working with him to support our servicemembers and bolster our national
security.”
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) said, "I’m
excited to welcome this strong and diverse group of legislators to the House Committee
on Agriculture for the 119th Congress. This is a pivotal time for our farmers, ranchers,
and rural communities, so we’ll hit the ground running with rigorous hearings and
oversight, all to ensure we deliver legislative victories for rural America and the farm
families that guarantee our nation’s food security."
The House Armed Services Committee oversees funding and policy for the Department
of Defense (DOD), the U.S. armed forces, and portions of the Department of Energy. It
plays a critical role in military operations, the organization and reform of the DOD, and
the defense-related activities of the federal government.
The House Committee on Agriculture has jurisdiction over agriculture, forestry, nutrition,
and conservation, and plays a role in reviewing policies related to international trade
and export of U.S. agricultural products.
