WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Rep. Mark Messmer (R-IN) denounced the rampant antisemitism taking place on college campuses across the United States in a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing. “Multiple Jewish students on the campuses you preside over report feeling ostracized for the sole fact that they are Jewish,” said Rep. Messmer. “Are you comfortable with your schools driving away Jewish students, or will you establish more useless ‘listening sessions’ and ‘ad hoc committees’ while putting out bland statements approved by lawyers? Is that really what your Jewish students deserve?” House Republicans have exposed hateful displays of antisemitism at American universities and revealed the shameful behavior of school administrators who ignore the despicable activities. This important hearing revealed that the disgraceful problem extends far beyond the usual Ivy League suspects, and includes smaller institutions, affecting thousands of college students across the nation. BACKGROUND: According to AJC's State of Antisemitism in America 2024 Report, more than four in ten (41%) young American Jews, ages 18-29, said they have been the target of antisemitism at least once in the past 12 months. 35% of American Jewish college students report experiencing antisemitism at least once during their time on campus, and over one in four (32 %) of American Jewish college students say they have felt uncomfortable or unsafe at a campus event because of their Jewish identity.
